Born to Charles Stewart Lindsey and Mary Polly Bennett, Dr. Samuel Lindsey married Sara Ann Boggs on 17 July 1855, and lost her less than two years later. He then married one of Sara's younger sisters, Lizzy Boggs, on 5 July 1857; she gave him the following children:

• William Pennington Lindsey (1858-1930)
• James Thomas "Pete" Lindsey (1861-1934)
• Sarah Elizabeth Lindsey Harris (1862-1956)
• Martha Ellen Lindsey Bryant (1865-1910)
• John Moses Lindsey (1867-?)
• Samuel L Lindsey (1870-1969)
• Susan Selena Lindsey Rodgers (aka Lydia S Lindsey)(1873-1915)
• Washington Eldridge Lindsey (1875-1965)

Before meeting Sara or Lizzy, the 1850 census records Sam living in the home of his sister, Amanda Lindsey Rhodes, and her family--as a thirty-five year old bachelor, just after the death of his father.

Sam served the CSA in the Civil War as a Private: 17th Texas Cavalry, 17th Regiment, Texas Cavalry (Moore's), Company B.
