Raymond Lewis Roubinek was the oldest of four sons. He was born in Dodge, Nebraska, January 7, 1894 to Josephine and Lewis J. Roubinek. They were farmers. The family moved to the YL Community, Bailey County, in 1921, where they also farmed.
Raymond and his brothers had an orchestra. Raymond played saxophone and a clarinet. One brother, Cloyd, played trap drums, another brother, Lambert, played trombone and saxophone. Hertha (Moeller) Walker played piano with them. The name of the orchestra was "Rag-A-Jazz." They were called to play in Amarillo and Lubbock band for the fairs. They also played in Hereford, Clovis, and around the area.
Ray and Katie had a 1929 Model Ford with no heater. When the weather was cold they lit a kerosene lantern, set it on the floor between them and covered their legs with a blanket. It made a good heater.
Katie C. Kennedy was the oldest of eleven children. She was born to Mary and Tommy Kennedy in Mineral Spring, Arkansas, November 10, 1906. She moved with her family from Arkansas to Muleshoe in 1925. Her father was a farmer.
Raymond and Katie met in Muleshoe and were married March 14, 1926 in the Farwell Methodist Parsonage. To this marriage was born one son Jack Lewis on March 9, 1942.
Raymond and Katie farmed in the Pleasant Valley community until 1957. We raised four to five hundred white leghorn chickens every year, milked three to five cows, also raised hogs.
In the thirties depression days, Katie dressed fryers and sold them for thirty-five cents each, also sold eggs as low as ten centers per dozen. We sold butter and cream.
We would go to town every Saturday afternoon with our produce and buy our groceries and gas for our car, then have a little money left.
Everybody from the country around Muleshoe would go to town every Saturday afternoon. We would all have a good visit.
In 1957 we sold the farm and moved into Muleshoe. In 1959 we bought the Good Luck Automatic Laundry. We sold it in 1974 to Lester Elmore.
Raymond was a World War I veteran. He played in the army band. He belonged to the American Legion and was a member of the Methodist Church. Katie is a member of the Methodist Church, Progress U.M.W. and of Muleshoe Senior Citizens Association.
Our son Jack graduated from Muleshoe High School in 1960. He played in the band from sixth grade through high school. He won a scholarship in music and went to college in Canyon, Texas. He is affiliated with Bank South in Dallas, and lives in Plano. He has three children, one girl and two boys. (Submitted by Katie Roubinek)
