Alda Blair Devine, 85 of Hillsville, entered into eternal rest on Monday, October 20, 2008 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem NC. He is survived by his wife Fern Linnie Devine of Hillsville, Va; daughter & son-in-law Karen & Anthony Dunford of Fancy Gap, Va, ; son & daughter-in-law Patrick & Christine Devine of Galax, Va; grandchildren & spouses… April & Chris Yon of Christiansburg, Va. with their kids Alexander, Nathan and Olivia, and Kellie & Dinesh Jos of Cary, NC. with their son Mark. Also survived by his sister Mary Belle Holder of Stafford, Va.


Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2008 at 2:00 PM at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel with Rev. Chris Carlisle officiating. Burial will follow in the Webb-Sky View Cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted by the Hillsville V.F.W. Post 1115.


After Al was honorably discharge from the Marine Corps, he worked for HQDA at the Pentagon in the Operations Dept until retiring in 1978 as Chief of Operations, the same day as his wife Fern.


During World War II, Al was a rifleman MOS 0311 with Golf Company 2nd Bn of the 3rd Marine Division and saw action in Bougainville from 1943-1944.


Military awards are the Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and the World War II victory medal.
