Paul George Hutchings, the highly respected superintendent of schools at Leopold and a principal at Zalma for five years, died early Sunday morning at the Veteran's Administrations Hospital in Poplar Bluff. He was 61.

Mr. Hutchings became superintendent of the Leopold School District in 1952, and served through 1957. While he was there, the school went from a two-year high school to a four-year high school.

Mr. Hutchings also served as Bollinger County superintendent of schools from 1957 through 1965, and then was principal at Zalma High School. He retired in 1968, and occasionally taught as a substitute teacher thereafter.

He was a veteran of World War II, and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Mr. Hutchings was born June 3, 1917, in Bonne Terre, son of the late Pierce and Minnie Deloney Hutchings. He married the former Miss Minnie L. Shoults on May 21, 1942.

He received a B.S. degree in education in 1948 and his master's in 1949 both from the University of Missouri at Columbia.

Mr. Hutchings began teaching in 1937 in Washington County. Before coming to Bollinger County, he was high school principal at Wheatland and Grade school principal at Eureka and St. Charles, Missouri.

He served five years as the chairman of the March of Dimes and was chairman of the local chapter of the Missouri Tuberculosis Society.

In 1958, he was instrumental in starting the Bollinger County Health Unit and served as chairman on the health unit board from the beginning until recently.

Serving as president of the County Library Board for several years, Mr. Hutchings had been involved with the board since 1958. He served as a trustee of the Missouri Library Association and was a member of the Missouri Library Recruiting committee, SEMO Board.

He was the first charter member and then chairman of the Bollinger County Unit of the Office of Economic Opportunity and was instrumental in developing the Tri-County Office of Economic Opportunity.

Mr. Hutchings also served as a Boy Scout master, Boy Scout commissioner, Scout counselor and manager of Little League baseball.

He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church at Leopold and taught religion classes there after his retirement from teaching.

Survivors include his wife; sons George Hutchings of Fort Worth, Texas; Charles Hutchings, Jackson; daughter, Mary Taylor, Lincoln City, OR; brothers, Harry, Leon and Jim Hutchings; and two grandchildren. One sister, Hulda and one brother, John, preceded him in death.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 Tuesday night at the funeral home and service was at 9 Wednesday morning at St. John's Catholic Church in Leopold. The Baker Funeral Home handled arrangements. Burial was in the church cemetery.
