DEATH CAME SUDDENLY
One of the Oldest and Staunchest Residents of Marion County

HAMER - This community was shocked yesterday by the sudden death of Hon. E. D. Carmichael, which occurred late Monday evening, 7 miles from his home, in Hillsboro township.

The circumstances near as can be ascertained were as follows. He had been surveying land all day and had finished his plats and left in his buggy to spend the night with a friend in the neighborhood. About dark his mule stopped in front of the house of Mr. Daniel Hays and he asked of the people present if Mr. Hays lived there, at the same moment the people present discovered that something was the matter with him, and not recognizing him, they asked him if he was drunk. He shook his head and smiled and at that moment dropped his whip from his hand and commenced to fall from the buggy, uttering the words, "My mule", as if to indicate to those present to look after his mule. They caught him and bore him to a tobacco barn at hand and as they laid him down he died.

He was about 60 years of age, was one of the staunchest and most upright citizens of Marion County, was an elder in the Pee Dee Presbyterian Church near his home, was a representative to the legislature in 1888 but declined reelection.

He leaves a wife and nine children, his eldest son, Lieut. R. L. Carmichael of the US Army, is a graduate of West Point and is a lieutenant of artillery stationed at Portland, Me; his second son, Mr. T. W Carmichael, is a graduate of The Citadel Academy in 1896, and is the principal of Dillon Graded School.

He was a highly educated man, having graduated with honors at Davidson College when a young man. His death is deplored by everybody who knew him.
