Following information told to memorial creator by Dorthy Thornal-Bohrn, Tom's daughter on August 14, 2003 -- Tom was born in Oklahoma Territory. (Family bible shows his birthplace as Colorado Springs, Colorado however) He was a lot older than his wife May and had another life & another surname before he started using the Thornal name. He spent many years in Wyoming and then settled in Nevada in 1902 so that he could escape a famous bounty hunter by the name of Tom Horn who was hired by ranchers in Wyoming to track down cattle rustlers. Tom's real name was Walter Robbins and he was known to have had three sons and at least one daughter from a previous marriage. His "other family" relatives came to his funeral in 1968. One of the sons attending Tom's funeral was 75 years old at the time and all of those children are deceased now. Tom was said to have been a relative of Will Rogers the humorist/writer, but nothing has been found to prove that. Will Rogers came to town and one of the people he visited was Tom. Tom had two other brothers in town who also used different surnames and who Will Rogers flew into Ely, NV. to visit occasionally. One of his brothers in Ely was named Nick Pearson; the other was Frank McPherson.

On January 19, 1929, Tom married May Williamson in White Pine County, Nevada. They had four children; Dorthy Louise (1929-2004), Thomas R. who was born in 1931, Robert William who was born in 1932, and an unnamed infant daughter who did not survive when born in 1934. They raised their family in the Ely & McGill, White Pine County, Nevada area.

Tom is buried very close to his mother-in-law, Hazel Belle Canfield-Williamson in Ely Cemetery, Ely, White Pine County, Nevada.
