Highland township has lost one of its aged pioneer residents this week in the person of James William Lockwood whose death occurred Tuesday, April 18, at the age of 81 years, 8 months, 6 days.

Mr. Lockwood was born August 12, 1823, at New London, Columbia county, N. Y., and with his parents came to Michigan in the fall of 1843. They settled in Highland of which township he has since been a continuous resident to the time of his death. May 7, 1853 he was united in marriage to Lucretia Corwin, who passed away Feb. 12, 1860. Three children were born to them, Ezra C. Lockwood of Milford, Mrs. Ira W. Calkins of Highland and Ira William Lockwood of Abilene, Kansas. On Oct. 9, 1860, Mr. Lockwood married Anna Dunham, whose death occurred March 29 of the present year.

Mr. Lockwood was a member of the Free Methodist church at Hickory Ridge. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. L. B. Townsend on Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the residence of I. W. Calkins and at 2 o'clock at the Highland Congregational Church.
