EUGENE EDWARD HAMMANN
1920 - 2010

Eugene Edward Hammann, age 89, passed away on Thursday, May 6, 2010 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri on November 15, 1920, to John J. and Lillie (Hagemeyer) Hammann, and spent his youth there with his brother, John G. (Jack) Hammann. He married Martha Foote Johnson on July 7, 1945 after meeting her in New York City, where he was in training with the Navy. He shipped out shortly after their wedding, but within a few months, as Lt. J.G. Hammann, he returned from duty in the Indian Ocean.
He attended the University of Missouri, known as Rolla School of Mines, in Rolla, Missouri where he also played football. In 2008, he was proudly inducted into the MSM Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the 1941 football team. After his Navy experience he graduated in 1947 as a Civil Engineer and joined Caterpillar, Inc. He initially was in regional sales and was based in Memphis, Tennessee, Nashville, Tennessee, Minneapolis, Minnesota and Peoria, Illinois, ultimately raising his family in Washington, Illinois while progressing in his career. He enjoyed fishing, carpentry, fixing things, camping vacations, jogging and racquetball.
Upon retirement in 1985 as a Caterpillar consultant for Dealer Management Development, he and Martha moved to Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, where he enjoyed activities with the Coast Guard Auxiliary as a member training officer, Duck Woods Golf Club (achieving a Hole-in-One), and the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE), Chapter #497.
Since moving to Pensacola, Florida in 2005, Gene was active with the Northminster Presbyterian Church, Cypress Lakes Golf Club, and two local men's golf groups: the Pin Seekers and the Sandcrab Seniors. Wine-making, meeting with friends, and managing a small portfolio of stocks rounded out his activities.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother and his wife of 64 years.
He is survived by four daughters: Nancy (Tom) Sislow, Linda Hammann, Carol (Larry) Bergman, and Marje (John) Luetkemeyer; four grandchildren: Joseph Sislow, Brandon (Marcela) Sislow, Jennifer Luetkemeyer, and Lauren Luetkemeyer, and one great-granddaughter: Sophia Sislow, as well as many relatives and friends.
A memorial service was held at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1100 East Nine Mile Road, Pensacola, Florida on Monday, May 10, 2010, officiated by Rev. Walk Jones. Inurnment will be at Barrancas National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Covenant Hospice, 5041 N 12th Ave., Pensacola, FL 32504, or Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1100 East Nine Mile Road, Pensacola, FL 32514.
