John McClanahan served as a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. He enlisted on September 5, 1860 in Company B, First Kentucky Battalion. He also served in Companies D & F of the same Battalion. While serving in Company F, he was captured at the edge of Rowen County, Kentucky on May 7, 1863. He was a POW at Camp Chase, Ohio; Johnson's Island, Ohio; and Point Lookout, Maryland. He was released from Point Lookout, Maryland on April 12, 1864 and returned home to Ellisville, Kentucky. He married his sweetheart, Susan Perry on March 23, 1865. They had 9 children. John was born, raised, married, lived, and died in the Old Stone House (aka Old Stone Tavern) off of Highway 68 in Nicolas County, Kentucky. His daughter, Willie Kate McClanahan married Walter Hunter. They had four daughters (Lillian, Eula, Elizabeth, and Marie).
