J.L. McDaniel was arrested by Gen. Hancock of the Union Army and committed to the 13th Street Prison on 11 November 1861 from there, he was transferred to the Old Capitol Prison by order of Gen. Porter. J.L. McDaniel remained in custody until 15 February 1862 when he was ordered released. He refused to sign repatriation papers to obtain his parole. J.L. McDaniel remained in prison the rest of the War according to his papers.
