Son of James A. and Katherine A. Prettyman.

Jim attended grammar school at Milton Elementary School. He graduated from William C. Jason Comprehensive High School in Georgetown in June of 1957.

Jim participated in religious activities as a youth at St. Paul UM Church in Milford. Later, Jim attended Memorial AME Zion Church in Rochester, N.Y. Most recently, Jim worshipped at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Rochester, N.Y.

Following graduation, Jim worked various jobs in the Milton area. In January of 1962, he entered the US Air Force. During his military tenure, Jim served as a dental assistant. At the time of his honorable discharge in October of 1964, Jim held the rank of Airman First Class E-4.

After his brief military stint, Jim entered Delaware State College in Dover in the fall of 1966. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in May of 1969.

Upon completion of his undergraduate degree, Jim moved to Rochester, N.Y., where he began employment with the Eastman Kodak Company.

During his tenure at Kodak, Jim held various positions in Quality Assurance and Customer Relations. As a Kodak employee, Jim often represented the company at various college and university career days.

Jim was recognized for his community work by various groups.

Over the span of 25 years, Jim has received awards from Memorial AME Zion Church, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Delaware State College Alumni Association, Rush-Henrietta Central School District, Rochester City School District, an the Ralph Bunche Scholarship Fund for his outstanding citizenship and commitment to education.
