John William Daniels was born on March 3, 1870 to parents John Franklin Daniels and Louvenia J. "Dollie" Joyce Daniels. He was the oldest of six surviving children born to the couple; 1900 U.S. census records stated that John's mother had given birth to 12 children in all.
John married Lillie Dale Gilbert, with whom he shares a stone, on August 15, 1891 in Lonoke County, Arkansas. Their headstone states they married in March 1891, but this does not correspond to the official marriage record on file.
John's younger brothers Grover Cleveland "Martin" Daniels and James Oliver "Bunk" Daniels, Sr. are buried in Hamilton Cemetery as well (Bunk's headstone is spelled in the singular, as Daniel, as are many of his descendants).
