ohn was drafted into the US Army March 1942, assigned to the 306th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division, and went to the South Pacific in the spring of 1944. He participated in the Guam Campaign and was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge for exemplary conduct in action as squad leader of an anti-tank platoon. He then participated in operations in the Philippines, then on to Okinawa, Japan. On May 4, 1945, Sgt Bucher was badly wounded while a group of soldiers were holding the left flank of advancing battalion lines. He died of his wounds on May 7, 1945 and was initially buried in the Army cemetery on Okinawa.

In early 1949 SSG Bucher’s remains were transported back to the US. His funeral was held on Feb 4, 1949, with burial in Northumberland Memorial Park. American Legion Post 44 provided the honor guard, firing squad and bugler for military rites.
