Raleigh G. Hays, 85, Wathena, died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at a St. Joseph, Mo., hospital.

He was born Sept. 8, 1916, in Wathena, to John and Martha Guy Hays. He graduated from Troy High School in Troy and Washburn University in Topeka. He was a farmer and had been a supervisor at Farmland Mills in St. Joseph, Mo.

He served with the 154th Artillery Battalion in the Army during World War II. He earned the American Defense Service Medal, American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Wathena Post No. 161 of the American Legion and Doniphan County Memorial Post No. 5531 of Veterans of Foreign Wars, all in Wathena.

He married Lucille Studer on Aug. 15, 1953, in Wathena. She survives.

Services at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Harman Rohde Funeral Home in Wathena will follow visitation. Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion will conduct graveside services at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Wathena.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church or St. Joseph's Catholic Church, both in Wathena, 66090.
