William Bowman was born Wilhelm Bumann in Rust, Baden-Baden, Germany. His father was stable manager for a local Baron. When Wilhelm was sixteen years old, he made his way to America following his older brother, Francis. Landing at Ellis Island, he gradually migrated to the midwest where he eventually settled in Nebraska.

As was the case with many immigrants, Wilhelm's name was Anglicized by U.S. authorities, although he was clearly recorded as Wilhelm Bumann on the ship passenger list.

William married Nellie May Olds about 1900. They had two children, Pearl Ruthin and Ronald Olds. In 1910, the family was living in Platford, Sarpy, Nebraska.
