Joseph was born in Ireland on March 17, 1830, to parents Joseph and Mary McClements. He was the second child born to his parents. Joseph married his wife, Agnes Nancy Hawthorne in 1855. The same year, he emigrated with his wife to America. They ended up settling near School Lake in the township of Brighton, Michigan, USA. Joseph's two brothers John and Samuel would also settle. He would use the land for farming and to raise his family.

Between 1858 and 1876, Joseph and Agnes would have 8 children: Margaret Ann in 1858, Samuel James in 1860, an infant son in 1861, Edward Joseph in 1865, William Samuel in 1867, Frank K in 1870, Fred K in 1874, and Amy May in 1876. The couple would tragically lose an infant son the same year he was born in 1861, their son Samuel in 1862, their son Frank in 1892 due to drowning, and a son Fred due to epilepsy. In 1900, Joseph was living with in Brighton with Nancy, his son Fred, and son William. Joseph's wife, Agnes, would pass away in 1904 due to myocarditis. Joseph would also lose his son, William, in 1908 due to complications with bowel movements. In 1910, Joseph was living with his eldest daughter Maggie, his son-in-law John Calvin Newman, his grandson Harry, and his grandson's wife Minnie.

In 1912, Joseph would pass away due to complications from severe dementia. He was preceded in death by his wife and 5 of his children. He was survived by his daughter Margaret, his son Edward, and his daughter Amy He was buried in Brighton Village Cemetery with his wife, children, and other family.
