Born in Philadelphia to Richard M. Brown (1815-1894) and Christiana Servin (1817-1893) of Geneva, Ashtabula County, Ohio. His parents moved from Pennsylvania to Farmington Township, Trumbull County, Ohio about 1838 as their oldest child of 11 children including Charles S. (1836-1921; FAGM# 81009704), Washington William (1839-1914; FAGM# 52126605), Isburn (1842-?), Elizabeth (Cain) (1843-1915; FAGM# 59662560), Harriet (Wheeler) (1843-1930), Orinda B. (Hollis) (1847-1928; FAGM# 77275658), Louis (1850-?), Adelia (1852-?), Emma (Ingersoll) (1856-1935), and Alma (Kelley) (1859-1950; FAGM# 46289881).

He served as Sergeant, Company D, 2nd Regiment, 171st Ohio Volunteer Calvalry. George's discharge paper reads, "George W. Brown, Sergeant of Captain Pikes's Company D, 2nd Regiment of Ohio Volunteer Cavalry volunteers enrolled 17th day of August 1861 to serve three years during the war is now discharged from 16th day of August 1863 at Columbus, Ohio. George W. Brown was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is 25 years of age, is 5 feet 6 1/4 inches high, light complexion, black eyes, light hair, and when enrolled - a nurse".

George married Eleanor Sauters 22 Oct 1867 in Newton Falls, Trumbull County, Ohio. In 1870 to his death, he farmed 71 acres is southern Braceville Township. In about 1918, the farm was sold to Newton Steel Company that would later be the Rockwell Bumper Plant in Newton Falls.

George died of gang-green infection resulting from a kick to his leg by his horse. An ironic death since he served as a "nurse" or later classified as a "medic" in the Civil War.
