Samuel Downing was born December 4, 1794, in Maryland, the son of George Downing and Elizabeth Bennett. He served at a Private in Captain Daniel's Company, Major Benjamin Daniel's 1 Odd Battalion, Ohio Militia, War of 1812. He married Margaret Matthews on January 8, 1818, in Pike County, Ohio. They had six children: George, Sarah (m. John Caudy), Elizabeth (dy), Thomas, Mary Jane (m. John Reese) and Samuel. Margaret died on January 23, 1836, in Ohio. On May 16, 1837, he married his widowed sister-in-law Mary Matthews Day. They had two sons, William Nelson and John Clark. She died on May 2, 1847, and was buried on Samuel's property in Chester Township, Logan County. Samuel gave the property as a cemetery. It is now known as Downing Cemetery. Samuel died August 22, 1866, aged 72 yrs. 8 mo. 18 dys. and was buried in Downing Cemetery. Note: There is no evidence he had a middle name despite the name on this replacement stone. The original stone did NOT have a middle name.
