CRYSTAL FALLS - Lawrence M. "Larry" Harrington, 74, of 133 N. River in Crystal Falls, passed away on Monday, May 3, 2010, at his home.

Larry was born Aug. 17, 1935, in Crystal Falls, son of the late Michael and Yarda (West) Harrington. He was a 1953 graduate of St. Matthews High School in Flint, Mich., and went on to attend the General Motors Institute and Bay De Noc Community College.

Larry married Shelby Grubbs in Flint on March 26, 1955. He was employed by General Motors for 16 years until moving back to Crystal Falls in 1969. Larry worked as a fire officer for 20 years with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

He was very active in local politics and served the community in many capacities. He was an Iron County Commissioner for 16 years, five of which he was chairman of the board. He sat on the Michigan Association of Counties, serving as vice president for one year. Larry was a member of the Governing Board of Michigan Municipalities (MMRMA) for 15 years and was a board member for UPCAP as well as the city of Crystal Falls planning and zoning board. He was chairman of the Tri County Answers Board and held a seat on the Pleasant Valley and ORV boards.

Larry was a member of Guardian Angels Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and spending time at camp. Larry most loved the time he spent with his family

Larry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Shelby; a son, Michael (Jennifer) Harrington of Marquette; a daughter, Pamela (Dominic) Beaudre of Manistique; four grandchildren, Steven (Sarah) Harrington USAF of Spokane, Wash., Melissa Harrington (Eric Rodorigo) of Chandler, Ariz., Melanie (Jerry) Cryderman of Sault Ste. Marie, and Matthew (Robin) Takala of Evansville, Wis.; and four great-grandchildren, Karissa and Darren Rodorigo, Kassidy Cryderman and Lilly Ellen Takala.

Visitation will be Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Nash Funeral Home in Crystal Falls.

The Knights of Columbus will recite the rosary at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Guardian Angels Catholic Church. Fr. Jeffrey Kurtz will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Doug Stacy, Charles Sartori, Chris West, Jeff West, John Faccin, Patrick Olson, James Sartori and Tom Princing.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
