John Henry Defoe was the son of Benjamin Defoe (ca 1753-ca 1829) and Martha White (ca 1755-ca 1830) of Albemarle Co, Virginia. John married Matilda Caroline Rothwell B: Mar 1, 1807-D: July 6, 1856 (daughter of John Rothwell and Susannah Thurman/Thurmond) on Sept 17, 1826 in Albemarle Co, VA. They migrated along with at least one of John's brothers, Levi Defoe, to St. Louis, Missouri, in the late 1820s. Altho, Levi stayed in St. Louis, John and Matilda with family migrated sometime in the 1840s to Moniteau Co, MO.

John and Matilda had 12 known children: Mary Melcina (1827-1872) married Henry C. Hickox; Susan White? (1828-1857) married 1st Dr. William Gibson, 2nd (Rev?)J. M. Hardy; Sarah Douglas (1830-1906) married William D.
