James was born in Stanly County where he resided as a merchant prior to enlisting in Company I (Stanly Rebels), 52nd North Carolina infantry in Stanly County at the age of 27. He was appointed 1st Lieutenant on March 29, 1862 and was promoted to Captain on July 1863. He was furloughed in February 1864. He tendered his resignation while at home on furlough. The reason he resigned was not reported. His resignation was not accepted; however, he failed to return to duty and was reported absent without leave on or about March 10, 1864. He was dropped from the rolls of the company on December 9, 1864 for prolonged absence without leave.
