JOHN PETER ALBAUGH SR.

Mr. Albaugh died at Forest Hills, Hickory Twp., at 4:30 AM of April 26, 1880, at the age of 77 years and 4 months.
It is with sorrow and regret we are compelled to chronicle the death of another of our most esteemed, well-known citizens. Unfortunately, we are without the exact date in regard to the place of birth of our late departed neighbor, and other items from which we could have better given a short sketch of his life, but from the best of our knowledge Mr. Albaugh settled in Hickory township on the old furnace tract about 25 years ago. By hard labor and economy he purchased a farm which he improved and lived upon until death called him hence. He raised a family of sons and daughters who are living mostly in the same neighborhood.
He was a man of sound judgment, well informed upon all general subjects, and we believe that up to within a half dozen years was frequently employed to teach the district school in his neighborhood. Mr. Albaugh had, all his life, been a prominent member of the Democratic party in this county, but seeing the abandonment of all the old Jacksonian principles by the leaders of
that party in the year 1878, he with all his 5 sons, joined the National party, since which time he has been an earnest worker in the new party.
About a year since his estimable Lady was called away from his side since which his health has been declining. He was soon afflicted with scrofulous swellings upon the neck, which at the time of his death were of large size. During last week at times, he suffered periodical attacks of pain in the left side. A physician was summoned and his sufferings were greatly relieved. We learned that he was able to go about the house and that on the evening before his death he retired feeling quite well. On his son's entering his sleeping room in the morning to ask after his health, it was discovered that his spirit had flown from its earthly tenement and that his long and useful life was sweetly and painlessly ended. It is needless to add that his family and friends have the heartfelt sympathy of all who knew him.
