Presbyterian clergyman and missionary to Syria

John Francis Lanneau was born at Charleston, South Carolina, on August 14,1809. After graduating from Yale College in 1829 he spent the next two years in the Theological Seminary at Princeton, New Jersey. In December 1835 he became a Missionary of the American Board and was stationed for ten years in Syria. He visited the United States in 1841, on account of weak eyes, but returned to Syria in 1843, taking with him his wife, Mrs. Julia H. Lanneau. Because of ill health, he retired permanently from foreign work in July 1846. He spent the remainder of his life in Georgia, as an agent of the American Board, and as pastor of Presbyterian churches at Mars' Hill, New Lebanon and Marietta. He died at Marietta, Georgia, on October 7, 1867.
