He married Aileen Perry on December 21, 1941, in Chenoa. They had one daughter, Juanita (Harvey) Petty of Goodfield. She survives along with Newell's sister Phyllis (Norlan) Nafziger of Stanford, six grandchildren and eleven greatgrandchildren.
He was a World War II Army veteran. He received the Bronze Star during military action in Luzon and he was a member of the Alamo Scouts Special Services while in the Phillipines. He was a proud member of The National Order of Battlefield Commissions.
