The Wellington Leader
May 13, 1976

Tom Berry, prominent farmer living one mile east of Wellington, died in Collingsworth General Hospital Monday afternoon, May 10, one day after he was admitted for treatment.

He was 85 years of age and still took an active part in his farming operations.

Mr. Berry had lived in Collingsworth County since 1907. For a number of years, he and his family lived in the Rolla-Swearingen area, then moved to his farm near town more than 25 years ago.

Those familiar with his farming operations considered him one of the outstanding farmers of the area. This included the care he gave to his land, as well as the ways in which he kept abreast of advances in agriculture.

Likewise, he was a community leader over a long period of time - a leadership he exercised quietly and always in the interest of those around him.

Thomas Benton Berry was born August 12, 1890, near Durant, Oklahoma, then in the Indian Territory. He was the son of W.T. and Sallie Eliza Berry both born in Alabama. Mr. Berry lived at Sulphur, Oklahoma before coming here.

He was married to Miss Rebecca Trew August 12, 1915 in Wellington.

Mr Berry was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Funeral services were conducted at the First Baptist Church Wednesday, May 12, at 2:00. Dr. Roy Collins, Jr., officiated and burial was in Memorial Gardens by Kelso Funeral Home.

Honorary pallbearers were Mack Willis, John Harper, G.B. Hopper, Bill Harbin, Zook Thomas, and Melvin Seale.

Survivors are his widow; one daughter, Mrs. Warren Cudd of Perryton; and three grandchildren.

One son, James Benton Berry passed away on September 7, 1967.
