James Clayton Hartley son of Joseph and Polly Singleton Hartley, was born in Jefferson County, Illinois, July 10, 1845. Here he grew to manhood. At the age of nineteen he crossed the plains by ox wagons, to Oregon. In 1865 at Jacksonville, Oregon, he enlisted in Company C, First Oregon Calvary, where he served for 15 months. He is a veteran of some of the Oregon and Washington Indian wars and took part in quelling the Klamath Indian outbreak.

On March 17, 1867, at Macleay, Oregon, he was united in marriage to Martha Isabel Givens. Seven children were born to this union; six sons and one daughter. Five sons have preceded him in death.

On October 17, 1933, at the home of his daughter in Maryhill, Mr. Hartley passed away at the age of eighty-eight years, three months and seven days. The wife passed away in 1909.

The surviving son is Dr. H. H. Hartley, of Goldendale and the daughter is Mrs. May Blades, of Maryhill. He is also survived by one grandson, two granddaughters and one great grandson.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Chapman Chapel, Rev W. T. Jordan conducting the same. The remains are to be taken to Banks, Oregon, today, by Mr. Chapman, where the burial will take place at 2:30 this afternoon.
