James Arthur Whitehead was born on 13 Nov 1840 in Tompkins, Delaware Co, NY, the third of ten children born to the union of James Whitehead of England and his wife Margaret Beatty of New York.

He served his country during the War of the Rebellion, enlisting on 10 Jan 1861 as a Private in Co D, 27th Regiment NYS Vol Infantry at Deposit, Delaware Co, NY.

He fought in the battles of Bull Run, Manassas, Second Bull Run, West Point, Gaines' Mill, Savage's Station, South Mountain, Antietam, and Fredericksburg.

He was honorably discharged and mustered out on 31 May 1863 at Elmira, Chemung Co, NY.

He reenlisted on 13 Jan 1864 as a Private in Co A, 144th Regiment NYS Vol Infantry at Tompkins, Delaware Co, NY.

He fought in the battles of John's Island, Honey Hill, Deveaux's Neck and James Island.

He was again honorably discharged and mustered out on 25 Jun 1865 at Hilton Head Island, Beaufort Co, SC.

After returning home from the war he married Miss Eleanor "Ella" Palmerton circa 1867 in Tompkins, Delaware Co, NY, one of five children born to Sylvenus W. Palmerton, II and Matilda LNU.

James and Ella had three children: William, Hattie and George W.

On 02 Sep 1882, James was inducted into the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) - Lewis L. Eggleston Post #184, Deposit, Broome Co, NY - Membership No. 59.

Ella died on 15 Aug 1885 in Cannonsville, Delaware Co, NY, aged 35 Years 10 Months 14 Days.

James remarried on 05 Jan 1888 in Cannonsville, Delaware Co, NY to Miss Rosemond "Rose" Celestia Winne, the youngest of nine children born to Levinus P. Winne and Julia A. Miner.

Rose and James had four children together: Minnie F., Margaret "Maggie" L., Arthur James Jr. and Julia V.

James died on 12 May 1899 in Cannonsville, Delaware Co, NY, aged 58 Years 5 Months 29 Days.

He was originally buried in the Granton Cemetery, Cannonsville, Delaware Co, NY, but his remains were disinterred and were removed to Laurel Hill Cemetery in 1963, during the construction of the Cannonsville Reservoir, under the direction of Mrs. Jennie Gardinier, James' relationship to her was listed as uncle.
