Kenneth Cole Bland, Sr. was born on January 24, 1905 in Crewe, Nottoway County, Virginia to William Wesley Bland and Nettie Washington Cole. When Kenneth was 7 years old, his mother died in childbirth with his brother, Joseph. Kenneth was the third of six children born to William and Nettie. His brothers and sisters were:Janice Marie, Dorothy Ann, William Wesley Jr. (who survived only one year), Milton Hamilton, and Joseph Washington. Kenneth worked for several years in Huntington, West Virginia as a master mechanic for the C&O Railroad. While in Huntington, he met and married Rubie Mae Gifford. They married on May 16, 1928 in Davis Creek, Cabell County, West Virginia. After they married, Kenneth changed jobs to work for the International Nickel Company (INCO), eventually becoming the Superintendent of Maintenance. He retired in 1970 after 40 years of dedicated service. Kenneth and Rubie settled on Rotary Road in Huntington and were blessed with three children: Mary Lynn, Kenneth Cole Jr., and Elizabeth Ann (Petie). He was a dedicated and loving husband and father. He died on May 4, 1991 in Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia.
