Leon Beidler Hendrickson, Jr.
(August 15, 1922 - May 2, 2010)

Lt. Col. Leon B. Hendrickson, Jr., U.S.A.F. Retired, 87, passed away on May 2, 2010 following a long illness. The only son of Norma Howell and Leon B. Hendrickson, Sr. was born in Jeffersonville, PA on August 15, 1922.
God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be so he put his arms around you and whispered, "Come to Me".

With tearful eyes and heavy hearts we watched you fade away Although we loved you dearly we could not make you stay.

A golden heart stopped beating working hands were put to rest. God broke our hearts to prove us He only takes the best

Col. Hendrickson graduated from Norristown High School in 1939 and entered Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia. He joined the Army Air Corp in 1942, and flew B-17's, C-47's, C-54's and B-24's as a RAFU (radar all fouled up) pilot in WWII based in England. He returned to college in 1946, graduating from Millersville University, PA in 1949. In September of that year he married Joan Kiehl Graybill in Lancaster, PA.

In January 1951 he was recalled to active duty to fly transports out of Great Falls, Montana. He went to Squadron Officers School in Montgomery, Alabama and in 1952 went on to Germany as a manpower officer for USAFE and SHAPE. Returning stateside in 1955 he retrained to fly KC-97's and then helped open the 90th Air Refuel Sqd. at Forbes Air Force Base in Kansas. He attended Command and Staff College in 1964, and then served as manpower officer for 2nd Air Force at Barksdale AFB before going to Osan Air Base, Korea in 1966. He finished his 28 year Air Force career on July 1, 1970 at Scott AFB, always as a reservist. Beginning a second career he taught Industrial Arts for Belleville District 118 for 13 years.

Col. Hendrickson was a past President of Protestant Men of the Chapel at Scott and a past President of Scott Chapter of The Military Officers Association. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Norristown. He taught 15 years as a volunteer for the AARP senior driving program and for the same period of time coordinated the Medical Retiree Affairs desk at Scott AFB hospital. He was a life member of the United States Power Squadron for whom he taught safe boating for 25 years.



Leon is survived by his wife of 60 years and two daughters; Terry Lee France and her husband, Roger of Georgetown and Jean Shelley Hendrickson of Austin; two grandchildren, Andrea Lynn Macera and her husband, Mark of Austin, and Michael Glenn France and his wife, Myleesa of Ft. Polk, Louisiana, plus five great grandchildren, Chase, Conner, and Rorey France and Addison Lynn Macera, and Mason Christopher Macera; and a sister, Betty Rebecca Brownback of Huntsville

The family will receive friends from 6-8p.m. at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel in Georgetown on May 5, 2010 .

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M., at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas
