John Arthur Hill was born, 6 Sept 1852, in Knobbs MO. He joined the cavalry during the Indian Wars, was stationed in Kansas where resided for a number of years, and married Kate Whitmer, 4 Dec 1872. They came to Oakley, MI in 1874. Where he worked as a foreman of the section crew on the Michigan Central Railroad for many years. Kate died in 1915 and John retired that same year.
He was a member of the Pioneers' Association of the Michigan Central.
