John A. Hoskins, Jr.

John Allen "J.A." Hoskins, Jr, 74,. of Paris passed away on May 1, 2010 while at home surrounded by his loving family, following a 3 month long battle with a sudden serious illness which began on January 30, 2010.

Visitation will be held for friends and family on Monday May 3, 2010 from 6 PM to 8 PM at Fry and Gibbs Funeral Home, 730 Clarksville Street, Paris.

Graveside service to be conducted on Tuesday May 4, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. at Meadowbrook Memorial Park with Rev. Dennis Cates officiating.

J.A., as he was known to his family and friends was born on September 8, 1935 in Red Oak, Texas (Red River County) to John Allen and Edna Hoskins. J.A. attended Detroit schools, and was a graduate of many technical certification & engineering programs and was a master welder.

J.A was a veteran of the United States Air Force. On August 4, 1955 he enlisted into the United States Air Force, completing basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio Texas, receiving an honorable discharge.

J.A. was Secretary Treasurer of Boilermakers Local 902 for over 10 years, serving as the final union officer after the closing of the plant. He worked for Babcock and Wilcox (B & W) for 33 years. While at B & W he was a welder and welding inspector.

He was a union member, steward, and union officer throughout his career with B & W.

He rose through the membership of the union, a cause he truly lived by and fought for. "Papa" was a 100% pure blood union member, and did his very best to make sure that his job was done to the best of his ability and that the members employees were treated fairly.

It was a daily ritual for "Papa" to come home and tell all about work and the funny events of the day at the dinner table. He was a soft spoken mild mannered person, with sometimes a dry sense of humor. He was well loved by his family, friends, and co-workers, and could manage to get a laugh out of just about anyone with his comments, his smile, and his big blue eyes.

After the plant closed, he held a number of jobs, including as a security officer, and truck driver. He was most recently employed full time as a medical transportation driver for East Texas Support Services full time until his illness, a job he truly loved. He enjoyed his job and all of the good friends he made while working there.

He was proceeded in death by his father, John A. Hoskins, Sr, in August 1990, and his mother, Edna Clark Hoskins in October 2003, grandson Joseph Andrew Hoskins on December 10, 1983, as well as sister-in-laws Helen Green in 1992 and Gearldine Walker in 2009.

He is survived by his wife, Duetta Stanfield Hoskins, of the home, who was his pride and joy, to whom he was married for 56 years 11 months. He met Duetta in September 1955 in Hugo, Oklahoma, and they were married on June 23, 1956 in Paris, Texas.

He survived by his son John A. "Allen" Hoskins, IV, and wife Gabriella, and son John Jones of Grand Saline; daughter Tammy Hoskins, of Paris; his eldest grandson John A. "Jay" Hoskins, V, of Paris, granddaughter Stacy Lynn McCoy, of Paris her children, great granddaughter Kaylyn McCoy and great grandson Zackary McCoy; and grandson Stephen Hoskins and wife Lori, and children Erick, Brieanna, and Luke of Sherman, Texas.

J.A. was the eldest of 6 brothers and sisters, all of whom survive him. J.A., is survived by brother Larry and wife Mary Ann; Dwight and wife Barbara, sister Mary Nell Dorse; as well as sister Rose, and husband Jesse; sister Mavis and husband Gilbert; and sister Christine.

J.A. is survived by one aunt, Maudie Westmooreland of Wichita Falls, Texas.

He enjoyed reading, spending time with his family and taking care of his grandkids and great-grandkids.

He had accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior, and his favorite verse was always John 3:16. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Papa, you will be sorely missed, but we will be alright, and we know we will see you again in Heaven.

Papa, your name and legacy will live on for generations to come.

You were the best husband, father and grandfather that your wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren could have ever had. You will live on in our hearts forever. We will never forget the memories we shared and the lessons you taught us. Until we meet again, we love you.
