Michael Deavers Dead
Michael Devers, an aged resident of this county and the father of Emmanuel R. Devers, of Harrisonburg, expired suddenly yesterday morning at his home near Athlone. His death was due to heart disease and occurred unexpectedly, shortly after he had left the breakfast table.
Mr. Devers had been in frail health for several years, but he arose at his accustomed hour Sunday morning, appearing as well as usual, and took breakfast with his family. After leaving the table he returned to his bedroom and lay down, as was his custom. Shortly afterward he was discovered dead in his bed. The discovery was made a few minutes before 8 o'clock and he could only have been dead a very short time.
Mr. Devers was about seventy five years old, and was for many years an active farmer. During the Civil War he served faithfully in the Confederate army.
He was twice married. His first wife was Miss Mary Ann Spitzer, whose death occurred many years ago. His second wife, who survives him, was Miss Mary Higgs. He leaves eight grown children — three sons, E. R. Devers, of Harrisonburg; Gilbert Devers of Page county; and Harvey Devers of near Athlone; and five daughters — Mrs. Alice Higgs, of Athlone; Mrs. Lucy Emerson, of Page County; Mrs. Sallie Rosenberger, of Ohio; Mrs. Lizzie Duel, of near Martinsburg, W. Va.; and Miss Ellen Devers, who lives at home.
