Francis M Walsh, a sophomore of the academic department and a member of St. Maur Hall, was fatally injured on January 4 when the automobile in which he was riding struck a culvert abutment south of Mendota, throwing him from the car and fracturing his skull. At the time of the accident,Walsh was returning to St. Bede's from his Christmas vacation, accompanied by two of his friends from home and William Stark, also a student at St. Bede's. Stark sustained a deep gash on his forehead and was rendered unconscious for half an hour, while other members of the party suffered less serious injuries.

The occupants of the machine were rushed at once to the Harris hospital, Mendota, where Francis died forty-five minutes later without regaining consciousness. The Reverend William Selk, of Mendota, administered the last sacraments of the Church to the dying boy. The others were able to leave the hospital after having their injuries dressed.

Funeral services for Walsh were held at St. Michael's church, Wheaton,January 7, with Reverend F. J Epstein officiating. Interment was made at St. Michael's cemetery. The Reverend Gilbert Bulfer, of St. Bede Abby, attended the funeral, accompanied by William Stark who acted as a pallbearer. On the day of the funeral a solemn Mass of requiem was celebrated at St. Bede's by Reverend James Lauer, College chaplain, assisted by the Reverend Leo Zimmerman as deacon, and the Reverend Thomas Carmody as sub-deacon.
