Claudius, age 29, enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 13 January 1862 in Anderson District, South Carolina. He was mustered as a Private in Company F (aka Capt. D.F. Hill's Company) in the 24th South Carolina Infantry. He was appointed 3rd Corporal on 1 December 1862, then promoted to 2nd Corporal on 30 January 1863. He was then promoted to 4th Sergeant on 1 June 1863, to 3rd Sergeant on 1 August 1863 and then elected Junior 2nd Lieutent on 11 April 1864. He was captured with Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's forces on 28 April 1865 in Greensboro, North Carolina and paroled on 1 May 1865.
