John James 'Jack' Benton (1840-1915) Sgt. Co. B (Hunter Rifles) and New Co. G. 4th La. Inf. En. May 25th, 1861, Sent to Ship Island 1861, Listed at Port Hudson Hospital Dec. 9, 1862. Camp Moore, La. Present on All Rolls to Aug., 1864. Appears on Federal Rolls of Prisoners of War Captured Near Franklin, Tenn., Dec. 17th, 1864, and Sent to Military Prison. Louisville, Ky., from Nashville, Tenn., Dec. 20th,1864. Transfd. to Camp Douglas, Ill., Dec. 22nd, 1864, and Discharged June 18th, 1865, on Oath of Allegiance. Res., East Feliciana Par., La. Died in Denham Springs, La.
*Nickname was 'Peg Leg Jack', It was believed he lost his leg in the war. (No proof has been found of that though.)
