Obituary published in Winchester, Franklin County, Tennessee newspaper Thursday, August 11, 1932:

J.D. Farris, Aged Citizen Died of Heart Attack, Sunday

J. D. Farris, aged 81, farmer of the Owl Hollow community, met death Sunday morning about 10 o'clock, while swimming in Elk River near his home. He had accompanied some children, relatives of the family, to the river. It was stated that he was a good swimmer and had been swimming in deep water and upon returning to shallow water, waist deep, was stricken with heart failure and collapsed in the water. His body was recovered within two minutes after the accident.

Mr. Farris had many relatives and friends who mourn the sad tragedy. Surviving are three sons, Frank, Will and John, all of Franklin County, and twenty grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Harris Chapel, conducted by Rev. C. E. Wright, of the Winchester Baptist Church. Interment was in the Harris Chapel Cemetery.

Note: Although his tombstone records his year of birth as 1848, it was more likely 1857. His parents recorded his age as 3 and 13 in the 1860 and 1870 census records. [They married in 1854.] He gave his age as 22 in the 1880 census. All three corroborate c. 1857-1858 as year of birth. It was only in later years that his age "jumped" ten years. His age was recorded as 53, 59, 68, and 77, respectively in 1900-1930 census records.
