Aaron J. Vanderhoof, son of Henry Vanderhoof, of this township, was killed by the west bound express on the Van. R.R. at Jewett, about 7 o'clock pm. Saturday, November 29th, 1879. Deceased was about 27 years of age, and apparently in good health. He had just eaten his supper and started across the track to a store to get some tobacco. It is supposed that the pilot struck him and threw him against a post, near the center of the platform, eight or ten feet from the track, where the body was found by the operator, about a half hour after the accident. The train was running at the rate of about 60 miles an hour. Deceased leaves a wife and one child, father, mother, six brothers and three sisters to mourn his untimely demise. The remains were buried in the graveyard west of Jewett, Sunday evening.
