I always felt like she should have been a detective by trade. She had an uncanny knack for seeing through any sort of ruse or nonsense, and she was without a doubt one of the most observant people I've ever met. Absolutely nothing got past her!
As a boy I was certain that mama was college educated - she was just so smart - how could she not be? I was flabberghasted to learn that she only attended school through the eighth grade.
Her full name at birth was Helen Barbara Moon. But she never went by Helen at all. In the family she was called "Bobree" or just "Bob".
I held her hand as she died of respiratory failure, around 4pm on a Saturday afternoon, in the ICU unit at St Vincents Hospital in Jacksonville. When I asked her if she was still afraid, she looked me in the eye and shook her head "No".
Rest in Peace Mama.
