Ruth G. (Phipps) Webster, 73, of Pottstown, Douglass Twp., wife of Charles W. Webster, passed away on Friday, Aug. 30 at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center after an 8 year battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Born in Richlands, VA., she was the daughter of the late Preston and Amelia (Sparks) Phipps.

Mrs. Webster graduated from Richlands High School, Richlands Virginia. She attended Longwood University, Farmville Virginia where she graduated in 1960 with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education majoring in social studies. Ruth first taught in Pennsylvania at French Creek Elementary School. In 1964-65 she taught in the American Dependence School in Asmara Ethiopia, where her husband was stationed as a member of the Armed Forces. Upon returning from Africa she taught in both Pottstown and Owen J. Roberts school districts. Ruth earned a Masters Degree in elementary education in 1969 from West Chester University. She also attended Lehigh University in Bethlehem where she received her certification in administration as an elementary principal. Ruth was appointed elementary principal in 1969 of Pine Forge and Little’Oley schools. She also served as principal at Colebrookdale elementary and twice at Washington elementary schools. She was principal when the addition was added at Washington School before retiring.

Ruth enjoyed singing with Zion Choral and was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Church. She was active for many years in The Gideons International. Ruth and her husband went on many disaster relief trips with Christian Endeavor where she supervised the preparation of the meals. Ruth was a former Boyertown Area YMCA board member and presently honored by being named Director Emeritus of the Boyertown Area YMCA board.

Surviving with her husband of 52 years is brother Glenn Phipps of Jewel Ridge, VA, her sister Dr. Lois Evans of Martinsville, VA; and her sister in law Jane Beaver of Pottstown.

A memorial service will be Thursday, Sept. 5, 11:00 AM at Trinity EC Church, 250 Swinehart Road, Boyertown with visitation from 10:00AM to 10:45AM. Burial will be Thursday, Sept. 5, 3:00PM in Pughtown Baptist Church Cemetery, 780 Pughtown Road, Spring City.

Ruth’s wish was that any contributions go the Boyertown Area YMCA financial assistance fund, for those who are in need help, at 301 W. Spring St. Boyertown, PA 19512
