Reuben Gottleib Ackerman was born June 13, 1904, to Jacob and Kathryn (Kitzman) Ackerman at Fairfax, S.D. He was their third child, but first son. He passed away May 22, 1978.

His mother died in 1907, at Gregory, D.S., and then his father brought him and his sisters to Sutton to live with his grandparents, uncles and aunts. In 1908, his father remarried and took the children back to Gregory, S.D. Reuben attended school at Aleganhy country school, one mile from their home.

In the fall of 1918, the family moved to north of Grafton, where he went to school at District 29. He was confirmed in Hope Reformed Church in Sutton. In 1923, they moved to Akron, Col. In 1924, Reuben returned to Grafton and Sutton area where he lived with relatives.

On June 22, 1928, Reuben was united in marriage to Mary L. Keil at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Keil. To this union were born seven children, Margaret, Harold, Viola, Elizabeth, Carol, Wayne and Ray. Reuben and Mary made their home in and around Fairmont since.

Reuben joined the Federated Church in 1928, and has been a member of this church since. He joined Hesperian Odd Fellows Lodge No. 42 February 15, 1946. He was on the fire department at Fairmont Air Base two years, and Fairmont Volunteer Fire Department 23 years. He was also on the Fairmont Rescue Unit.

Reuben loved and enjoyed his family, as well as his many, many friends. He visited frequently at the rest homes and hospitals, and homes of elderly people and bereaved ones.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Mary L.; their daughters, Mrs. Charles (Margaret) Oleson of Sacramento, Cal., Mrs. Gary (Viola) Kovar of Garland, Neb. Mrs. Harold (Elizabeth) Lee of Portland, Ore.., Mrs. Alvin (Carol) Fox of Geneva; three sons, Harold J. of Oregon City, Ore., Wayne C. of Brady, Mont., Ray E. of Alexandria, Va.; six sisters, Mrs. Ruth Ickes of Los Molinos, Cal., Mr. and Mrs. Reuben (Rose) Sell of Sutton, Mrs. Bonnie Schafer of Sacramento, Cal. Mrs. Leona Reimche of Lodi, Cal., Mr. and Mrs. Harlan (Barbara) Nichols of Long Beach, Cal., and Mr. and Mrs. Bill (Ada) McKinnon of Stockton, Cal.; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Alice Ackerman of Lodi, Cal.; 14 grandchildren, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, and one brother.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, May 25, from the Fairmont Community Church with Rev. Jay Vetter officiating.

Pallbearers were John Anderson Jr., Leonard Eifert, Rex G. Logan, Lewis E. McCreath, Everett Nichols and Darien Thomsen.

Interment was in the Fairmont Cemetery.
