Hattie married Bertel Austin on Christmas Day in 1896 in Wood County. They had a daughter, Opal. After the death of her husband, in 1910, Hattie never remarried. She remained a widow for 50 years. She was the daughter of Elkanah and Amelia Stevens Gill with siblings: George Roy and Earl Harrison. (Her birth was registered as Hallen Hattie.)
