James Payne Hancock was the s/o Isaac LaFayette & Malinda Payne (Underwood) Hancock. He was the namesake of his grandfather James B. Underwood & g-grandfather, Payne McClary (McCleary). Married Bertha "Birdie" Mae Pollard 12 OCT 1911. Four children: Leroy, Sr., Sallie Mae, Melton Eugene, & Baby girl Hancock who was born premature; survived few hours.

Retired machinist Sanford & Day Iron Works, Knoxville.

James Payne died at 72 years of age and was survived by his mother, Malinda Payne (Underwood) Hancock.

Hancock, James Payne - 72, of 134 Pickering Street, Knoxville, died Tuesday afternoon at Fort Sanders Presbyterian Hospital. Survivors: wife, Bertha Mae Pollard; son, Leroy Hancock, Townsend; daughter, Sallie Mae Bumbalough, Michigan; mother, Malinda Hancock, Knoxville; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; brother, Brownlow Hancock; sister, Mrs. Paralee Horsley, Knoxville.
Graveside services 2 p.m., Thursday, Pollard Cemetery. The body will be taken to the family home. Rawlings Mortuary, Sevierville in charge.
