To Oakland in 1866
To Etta Peckham Wixson, mother of Supervisor Clifford Wixson, and pioneer of this region, the Knave is indebted for tales out of the old California and Oakland life. "My father, Charles C. (sic) Peckham", says Mrs. Wixson, "came to California from New Jersey in July 1852. The vessel was quarantined and the trip took six months. My father built a blacksmith shop in San Antonia from the timbers secured from the redwoods, the old picnic grounds in East Oakland. He mined in different places in California, was rich several times, made his last strike at Forest City. He returned to New York in 1864 and in 1866 brought us all to California. He came by the steamer Moses Taylor on the Atlantic side and San Diego on the Pacific side. We landed in San Francisco in July 1866, came across to Oakland on the east bay ferry boat, which was stuck on the bar several hours. Finally we landed at Sand Street which is now known as First and Broadway. Fare was 1.00 per head. On gazing around everything seemed to be wilderness, plenty of wild game could be obtained. We waded in the sand up to Fourth Street. Father pointed out a modest little building and said to mother "there is your home"...We had left a beautiful home in New York...the change was so great mother sat down and cried. Near where we lived, Mr. Carpenter who owned the waterfront, lived in an old hull of a boat and had an oyster bed. On my first visit there I was homesick and cried. He wanted to give me oysters but I did not eat them. Where the Hall of Records now stands was covered with oak trees and we girls and boys used it as a playground. West of Market Street, called Hardy's Wood, wild shrubbery and berries could be obtained. The colored people had a tent there. They called it the Christian Church".
