Civil War Union Army Officer. He was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant, in Company C, 29th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 1, 1862. He served in this role through the December 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg and the January "Mud March", and was promoted to Captain and commander of the unit on April 4, 1863 when previous Captain Thomas A. Slack resigned. He led his men through the May 1863 Chancellorsville Campaign, and was honorably mustered out on June 30, 1863.
