NEWTON — Christen Michelle (Burkholder) Barta, 36, went to be with the Lord on Thursday (April 22, 2010) at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita after a 10-month battle with cancer. Christen was born on Nov. 30, 1973, in Kingman to Richard and Peggy Burkholder. Christen married Karel Barta on Dec. 11, 2009.Christen grew up in Newton, and graduated from Hesston High School in 1992. She was a medical assistant for Dr. Valerie Drake-Albert in Wichita.
She began singing at the very early age of 5, doing special programs with her mother, along with singing in church throughout her childhood and teenage years. From there she went on to use her beautiful voice as a ticket to see the world, which helped her build her performance skills that led her to touring Europe and the United States as a part of The Continental Singers. She took some time after that and went to school in Hutchinson Community College, where she sang with the Select Choir and also was a musical soloist. She then went on to work for Carnival Cruise Lines as the lead singer in a band. She continued to sing throughout her life in numerous weddings and special events for her friends and family and most recently sharing her testimony through music at Grace Baptist Church in Hesston. Christen's love for the Lord was always known. She was saved when she was 11 years old and recommitted her life during her tour with the Continental Singers. She had a desire to lead people to the Lord and toward the saving grace that comes with the acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. She would never shy away from asking people if they knew Jesus and, if they didn't, she always took the time to tell them her story of how choosing to walk with Him as her personal Savior saved her life and secured her eternal home in Heaven. Christen is survived by her husband, Karel Barta; parents Richard and Peggy Burkholder of Newton; brother Charles Burkholder, his wife Mary and their three children, Haley, Shuvonna and Brayden of Newton; brother Corey Burkholder and wife Rachel and their son Jacob and soon-to-be son Owen of Hesston; her best friend Kerri Hurd and husband Joel and their son Jeremiah of Newton.Christen also is survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins and brothers and sisters in Christ. She also leaves behind her beloved dogs, Buster Brown, Junior Brown and Madison Lynn. Christen was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Lloyd and Maxine Burkholder; maternal grandparents, Charles and Evelyn Hill; step-grandfather, James Roberts; and baby cousin Jared Ramsey.Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Salem United Methodist Church with Pastor C.T. Spear of Grace Baptist Church presiding. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Petersen Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. A memorial has been established for the Grace Baptist Church of Hesston building fund.
