Killed in a battle near SHELBYVILLE,TN. His son, William, who participated in the same battle, returned to the field, wrapped his Father's body in a blanket and buried him in a coffin made of fence sidings that had been destroyed during the battle. After the war William returned, exhumed the body. BARBABAS ARTHER was buried in the CONFEDERATE CEMETERY in SHELBYVILLE,TENN.

BARNABAS served with the 'CHEROKEE GRAYS' for the 12 month period. Returned home to put in a crop. On November 15,1862, he and his son WILLIAM HOUSTON ARTHER, who was 18, enlisted in CO C 2nd BN AL CALVARY.
