Son of Andrew Blackwelder &
Rachel [Bost] Blackwelder

Married Mary File
January 14, 1858
Cabarrus Co., North Carolina

Died in Civil War
at Gettysburg, PA--5th of 6 children of Andrew Blackwelder and wife Rachel Bost.
--Occupation: Farmer.
--John married Mary Foil in Cabarrus County on Jan. 14, 1858. They had 2 sons: Anthony Adolphus Blackwelder and Luther Wesley Blackwelder.
--Confederate Service: He enlisted in July 1862 in Company F, 57th NC Infantry. Private Blackwelder was killed in action at Fredericksburg.
--Note that his headstone gives completely different information. His military record is verified in several sources. He was most likely buried in a mass grave with other Confederates at Fredericksburg. I believe this memorial stone was created at the time his widow Mary died in 1893. Only one son then survived. He was only 4 years old when his father was killed, and there was likely no written record of the death date. The family likely remembered the battle as being Gettysburg rather than Fredericksburg. The Battle of Gettysburg was in July 1863, and the headstone was already in error on this
