Daughter of Calvin McKinley "Cal" YATES and Roxie Rosetta WATSON. Married Harvey GILLIAM, Sr. on 1/8/1944. Mother of twin daughters and one son.

Mrs. Harriett Yates Gilliam, 78, of 230 Baird's Creek Road, Route 1, Vilas, widow of Mr. Harvey Gilliam, Sr., died Tuesday morning, May 9, at her home.

She was born March 13, 1917 in the Matney community of Watauga County, a daughter of the late Calvin and Roxanna Watson Yates. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Glenda Hodges and her husband, A. B., of Vilas, and Linda Harrigan and her husband, Michael, of Sugar Grove; a daughter-in-law, Peggy H. Gilliam of Vilas; three grandsons, Bill Hodges and his wife, Liz, Charles Gilliam and his wife, Kathy, and William Gilliam, all of Vilas; two granddaughters, Tami Henson and her husband, Dwain, of Vilas, and Roxanna Miller and her husband, Joey, of Zionville; five sisters, Ehtel Owens and Mattie Banner, both of Newland, Beatrice Wilson of Ridgeway, Va., Mildred Harmon of Millersville, Md., and Irene Miller of Boone; and four brothers, Andrew Yates, Henry Yates, Alfred Yates and David Yates, all of Banner Elk.

She is also survived by five great-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchild; a number of nieces and nephews and special friends, Phyllis Hicks, Deborah Mullins and Kathy Earp.

She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Harvey Gilliam, Jr.; three sisters, Miss Marie Yates, Mrs. Kathleen Bowman and Miss Betty Yates; and two brothers, Mr. William Yates and Mr. McKinley Yates.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 1-2 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Gary Shew and the Rev. Mike Barfoot. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will receive friends this evening (Wednesday) from 7-9 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, friends may call at the home of Glenda and A. B. Hodges on the Baird's Creek Road in Vilas.

Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to Hospice of Watauga County, Route 5, Box 199, Boone, N.C. 28607.
