Chico Enterprise-Record, Monday, February 17, 1986: "Winifred Wells. Durham (E-R) -- Services for Winifred Ellen Wells, 68, of Durham will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Brusie Funeral Home in Chico. She died Sunday in her home following a short illness.

Mrs. Wells was an accomplished musician and was associated with the Mel French Band, her own Family Band and remained active in the community with her talents as a pianist.

She was born July 7, 1917, in Durham to Dick and Grace Smith. She married Hugh Wells on April 18, 1942, in Carson City. She was a member and past president of both the Durham Junior Women's Club and the American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 673 of Durham, and was a member of the Durham and Butte Pomona Grange.

She had been involved in cooking for the Durham Rotary since 1943, and for the past 15 years had owned her own catering service.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Dicklyn Joy Boyce of Durham; two sons, Allen Darby of Chico and Ronald Darby of Zephyr Cove, Nev.; a brother, Willis Smith of Durham; her mother, Grace Smith of Durham; and three grandchildren.

The Rev. James Patterson, pastor of the Durham Community-United Methodist Church, will conduct the service. Interment will be in the Veterans Court of Honor at Glen Oaks Memorial Park in chico.

Contributions may be made to the American Legion Post No. 623 Scholarship Fund, the Durham Volunteer Fire Department or to Enloe Hospital's hospice program, in care of the funeral home."
