Jean was the second of two children born to Herbert Marvin FLENNIKEN (1896-1931) and his wife, Mary Ellen DICKINSON (1893-1932).

Jean was not quite six years old when her father died, and she was not yet seven years old when her mother died, leaving Jean and her only sibling, her older sister, Ella Faye, in the care of their maternal grandparents, Samuel Abel DICKINSON (1856-1935) and Laura Ann FINLEY (1870-1948) who took them in and raised them on the family farm in Green, near Kenedy, in Karnes County, Texas.

Jean was married to Roy Areatus ALLEN, Jr. (1921-1988) and together they had four children. Their names and approximate years of birth are shown below.

The photo at the top right was taken at a DICKINSON family reunion in 1957 at the DICKINSON family farm in Green, Texas. It has been deeded to Rhoda Mae DICKINSON LISTER and her husband, Bethyl Earl LISTER who lived with and cared for grandmother, Laura Ann FINLEY DICKINSON in the last two years she was bedridden from a stroke in May 1946 to the fall of 1948 when she was placed in a nursing home in Yorktown where she died 19 Nov 1948.
